Litton Mill, Derbyshire – Specialist External Redecoration & Access Solutions

Swirlforce was appointed to deliver a comprehensive programme of external repairs and redecoration at the iconic Litton Mill, a prominent former 18th-century cotton mill in the heart of Millers Dale, Derbyshire.

Now transformed into luxury residential apartments, the historic building presented a number of technical and logistical challenges due to its size, location and complex access requirements. Working across multiple elevations, our team carried out extensive preparation, repair works and full external redecoration, ensuring the building’s appearance and long-term protection were restored to the highest standard.

A key element of the project was the use of specialist Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), enabling safe and efficient access to difficult-to-reach areas while maintaining productivity and minimising disruption to residents and visitors.

A Challenging Project

The most significant challenge was the building’s position directly alongside the fast-flowing River Wye. Several work areas required operations above, or immediately adjacent to, the water, demanding meticulous planning and robust safety controls. Prior to commencing work, Swirlforce developed comprehensive risk assessments, detailed method statements and bespoke emergency rescue procedures specific to the site. This proactive approach ensured the works were completed safely, efficiently and without incident.

One of the many hurdles with this project was to get the large MEWP over a narrow bridge where we had to be very conscious on weight restrictions. On top of this the MEWP had to have an out reach of at least 18m whilst being positioned both far enough from the edge of the bank yet still be able to reach safely across.

As custodians of a building with a rich industrial heritage, our team took great care to protect the character of the property throughout the project. Originally constructed during the Industrial Revolution and once recognised for its role in Derbyshire’s textile industry, Litton Mill is today a highly desirable residential development situated beside the picturesque River Wye and the popular Monsal Trail.

This project demonstrates Swirlforce’s ability to successfully deliver complex external maintenance works on heritage properties in challenging environments. By combining specialist access solutions, rigorous health and safety planning and a commitment to quality workmanship, we were able to provide a durable, high-quality finish that enhances both the appearance and longevity of this remarkable historic building.
